Diana Thater: The Sympathetic Imagination
Los Angeles-based artist Diana Thater chops up video into its most basic components—primary and secondary colors of light—and reassembles them into room-filling projections. With mostly animals as subjects, Thater forces visitors—against their best museum etiquette—to step into the multi-wall, multi-projector installations. The exhibition is spread across the LACMA campus—a subliminal justification for their single-building expansion—with two permament works in the Bing Theatre lobby, early pixaleated works in the Art of the Americas building and spectacle-sized installations on the third floor of BCAM. Standouts pieces include “Day for Night One, Two and Three,” an almost cosmic depiction of flowers drowned in blue light, and “Life is a Time-Based Medium,” which layers projections of a Hindu temple, rhesus monkeys and a movie theater into an immersive architectural space.
Starts Friday, November 27th – Sunday, February 21st
Included in Museum Admission $15
